If Zahi had any ambitions of promotion to Minister of Culture they have probably been thwarted by the election of a Bulgarian lady, Irina Bokva, as Director General of UNESCO who beat Farouk Hosni in the final run off vote.  That hopefully means Dr Hawass will be excavating in the Valley of the Kings for many years to come.

Not surprised at this election result. given Hosni's wild crazy anti isralie statements made on several occasions. He would have been too much of a risk.

It could swing both ways. Bokova is an accomplished leader, but the trouble facing Bulgaria's own heritage - treasure hunters, lack of government funding - may be a precursor to her tenure.

Hosny said he would resign as Minister if he lost the UNESCO race. Of course there is a refused resignation in the past and he said he had enough guaranteed votes to win the UNESCO election. We will see.
