Andie has presented a paper on the eradication of the village of Qurna by Caroline Simpson,
Coordinator of what was the Qurna History Project.  Caroline describes the destruction of Qurna by the Egyptian authorities, led by the Minister of Culture, Farouk Hosni, and the Vice Minister of Culture Zahi Hawass as "cultural genocide".  Read it for yourself and make up your own mind.

I have read the article and found it interesting but unbalanced and written so as to put the former inhabitants of qurna in a good light while demonising the SCA. Its sad that the horrendous damage done by the inhabitants of qurna deliberately choosing to locate their tombs on top of tombs and the damage perpetuated both deliberately by ransacking and as a result of water seepage is given very short shrift indeed. Lets hope that there are still some decorated tombs left and that they havent all been damaged. This might just be Hawasses most important act of his tenure as SCA president.
