Since Andie Byrnes has been covering the general news so well, there is no point me repeating it here.  I'll get back to concentrating on the New Kingdom and on Upper Egypt / Nubia.  If there is a major story (e.g. final confirmation of the situation and Abusir and Saqqara), I will cover it here though.  Some teams (e.g. Dr Kent Weeks) are still at work in the Luxor area.

The Looting Database is up to date with all news I have found by 3:30pm Egyptian time.  The biggest updates have been to the Saqqara section where the situation remains confused, but some reassurances are starting to be received.  I was also please last night to receive confirmation from one of the monasteries in the Sinaai that they are safe - that is on the database.  It is easy to think only of Pharaonic heritage, but the Christian and Islamic cultural heritage is also important.

Hi kate i have totally given up believing anything i hear, Hawass seems to have come up with at least 3 different versions of the cairo museum break in and as far as saquara is concerned i do not believe his reassurances at all in light of conflicting views. Keep up the good work as usual you are doing a superb job, daveh

It's easy to criticise Hawass's coverage: there are obvious inconsistencies and he does seem to have under-reported damage and looting. I believe he is right, however, that there are people spreading deliberate misinformation which substantially exaggerate the scale of the damage. Suddenly, blogging on Egyptology has gone from something academic, to having a distinctly political dynamic. I can't say I like the new environment. I will do my best at the Looting Database to get as closely to the truth as is possible in the current environment.

i agree kate the new political edge re comments to your blog is a dynamic that i am not comfortable with either involving for the first time in my memory a more combatative edge than the more innocent comfortable club type discussion that has existed before!

That's a fair criticism, of me and one I will take on board.
Best wishes
