This article from Huffington Post is three weeks' old now but I have only just come across it. It is an article about Zahi Hawass. Open about his failings, it concludes that the tourist dollars he attracted to Egypt may offset the deep resentments many hold towards him.
Of more interest is the section on the 2011 break-in at the Egyptian Museum with two standout quotes:
“We found pieces in the street and had to carry them back inside,” says Saad. “Some Egyptians helped us collect them.”And
There was talk, later substantiated by the Egyptian Cultural Heritage Organization, that the perpetrators had been security guards and police officers.

There was a lot of talk of security guards and police officers being the perpetrators of the gift shop break in. You might recall the article I wrote about it, "Who Looted the Egyptian Museum":

The Huffington Post article is referring to the official announcement from the Egypt Cultural Heritage Organisation:
"The perpetrators of the looting of this gift shop appear to have been security guards and tourist police who had removed their uniforms."
This was also reported in the International Council of Museums (ICOM) report in which it was stated by the former director of the museum of Egyptian Antiquities (2004-2010) Mrs Wafaa el-Saddik, that the looting of the new gift shop was an inside job, carried out by the museum’s own security and Egyptian Police dressed in plain clothes.
