Andie Byrnes has just published (I hope - this is scheduled) an interesting article on Egyptological about the ancient Egyptians' relationship with the desert. So much of our attention is focused on the narrow fertile strip of the Nile, and the immediate margins used for tombs. As Andie points out, the desert was an integral part of the land of Egypt, with several well-established trade routes.
